The diamond shield doesn't sharpen. When the shield stops cutting, this means that diamond grains have been "closed" in a metal binder. In order to re-discover them, make several cuts in strongly abrasive material, such as sandstone or concrete block. This process is called "refreshing" or "opening" the shield.
